This journey has taught me more than technical skills — it’s taught me that open source is built on community, empathy, and encouragement.

Working in public gave me confidence, but more importantly, it connected me with people who truly see each other. Whether it was collaborating with Joseph or learning alongside other Outreachy applicants, I realized: shared growth is the real reward.

And you don’t have to take my word for it — here’s what the community said:

Community Reflections

Cornelius Emase—watching his growth has been amazing… The dedication and commitment he puts into every task, he always goes above and beyond.

And when he hosted the Fedora event at Murang’a University of Technology in Kenya??? 🤯🤯🤯 really awe-inspiring…

So yeah… I’ve learnt a lot from him. Shoutout to him for the amazing job he’s been doing so far…

— Jamillah Bello

You are 💯 right. Cornelius Emase is a go-getter and I admire how he does things, no matter how little, with perfection. A big shoutout to you for effortlessly being an inspiration.

— islamiyat-sanusi

Knowing how shy and withdrawn I can be sometimes, one big thing I’ve gained from this experience is confidence — confidence to contribute, to speak up, and to grow in public.

I’ve also been so inspired by Cornelius Emase — watching how you showed up, shared, and supported others has really pushed me to keep going.

— Ayomide Olugbenga-Ojo

This kind of feedback is everything. It validates the emotional labor that often goes unseen in technical work. It proves that mentorship, mutual care, and visibility matter.

In open source, we don’t just build software — we build each other up.

Realizations from Outreachy

  • Open source isn’t just about code.

    • It’s about community, people, and lifting others.
